Nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Mountain High Adaptive Ski Program offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing for individuals of all abilities. |
Thanks to your generous donations, the Mountain Shadows CARE (Creating Active Recreational Experiences) program sponsors ski trips for Mountain Shadows Community Homes – San Diego residents.

Says Gloria Mederos, new Mountain Shadows Activities Director, “Mountain High is a great experience for the residents. It’s a new and different experience for them. They have fun. They have lunch together. They listen to music together. They sing. It’s a good time for them.” |

Says one Mountain High staff member, “We look forward to seeing the Mountain Shadows residents every year. They bring residents to Mountain Shadows every week – and it’s always the highlight of our week.” |

He adds, “We take our Adaptive Ski Program very seriously. Our instructors are all certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), and/or the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI).
“We’re in compliance with all ADA laws. Everyone in our program is adaptive certified.” |

Sit-skiing provides a sense of freedom difficult to duplicate in other adaptive sports.
Sit-skiing helps in developing new skills and building confidence. It also helps develop core strength. |

At Mountain Shadows, through adaptive sports and many other programs, we encourage our residents to surpass any perceived limitations and live life more fully. |

“Imagine what it’s like to ski down mountains at 70 miles per hour. Now, imagine doing that blind.”
~Three-time Blind Paralympian, Danelle Umstead
Danelle Umstead’s motto is to “live the impossible every day.”
Some of our Mountain Shadows residents may be blind, or deaf, or may use wheelchairs. Yet, through our CARE program, and our many adaptive activities, like sit-skiing, we are helping them to live their impossible each and every day. |
