Highway to the Danger Zone

Revvin’ up your engine

Listen to her howlin’ roar

Metal under tension

Beggin’ you to touch and go

Mountain Shadows Residents Enter the Danger Zone

by Sheryl Wilde

Many of you may remember the movie Top Gun. Images of Tom Cruise as his F-14 Tomcat hits the deck of an aircraft carrier in a shower of sparks and screeching metal, slamming to a halt as the jet’s tail hook catches the 3-wire, are seared into the mind’s eye of a generation.

Thanks to the Mountain Shadows CARE (Creating Active Recreational Experiences) program, residents recently walked and rolled into the Danger Zone aboard San Diego’s USS Midway Museum.

Residents toured the massive flight deck and laid their hands on restored aircraft. They also visited the Captain’s Cabin, mess halls and experienced how the 4,000-plus person crew lived, worked and played aboard ship.

“The residents loved touring the USS Midway,” says Vickie Perdaris, Activities Director. “They enjoyed learning about the ship and hearing stories about life onboard.

“This was one of the first activities following the pandemic, so everyone really appreciated being able to get out into life again!”
