“Everyone must take time to sit … and watch the leaves turn.” -Elizabeth Lawrence |
“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it.” ~George Eliot Hot cocoa. The warm glow of a fireplace. A crisp chill in the air. A walk in the woods. And … pumpkins…
There is a kind of magic as fall turns the leaves into a kaleidoscope of stunning colors.
And, thanks to the MSF CARE program, our MSCH – San Diego residents delighted in delicious autumn at Bates Nut Farm and Palomar Pumpkin Palooza throughout October. |

“Almost every single one of our residents went to either Bates Nut Farm or Palomar Pumpkin Palooza,” says Gloria Mederos, MSCH-San Diego. “And the residents really had a great time!” |
MSCH-San Deigo resident, Evelyn, at the Giant Pumpkin Patch. Wait! Is that The Great Pumpkin behind her?!?! |
Bates Nut Farm and Palomar Pumpkin Palooza celebrate fall pumpkin season with seemingly endless fields of pumpkins, hayrides, straw mazes, games, and lots of food!
MSCH-San Diego residents especially enjoyed exploring the Giant Pumpkin Patch – and we were told of multiple sightings of Charlie Brown’s elusive Great Pumpkin!!! |

Bates Nut Farm and Palomar Pumpkin Palooza both have petting zoos with goats, sheep, geese and more. “The residents love feeding the animals and interacting with them,” says Gloria.
“One of the goats really liked Michael,” adds Anarochelle Goard, MSCH-San Diego. “The goat kept following him and coming up to him. The goat didn’t care about anyone else. It just wanted to be by Michael. The goat would follow him and sniff him. It was really cute. And Michael was all smiles!” |

“We’ve been taking our residents to Bates Nut Farm for many years,” adds Gloria. “The residents love it and are always just so happy to be there.” |
Residents having a ghostly good time! |
Do you remember a day like this?
A day at the pumpkin patch … the smell of autumn in the air, the color of the changing leaves, the search for the perfect pumpkin?
Memories are made of days like this – from special moments shared with friends and family. |
Resident, Margo, holds her chosen pumpkin while giving the “I love you” hand sign. |
Every resident went home from Bates and Pumpkin Palooza with their own special pumpkin. It was a memory-filled day spent outdoors, in the fresh fall air, with their Mountain Shadows friends – the Mountain Shadows Family.
And it was an extra special day for one resident in particular.
“Margo doesn’t always participate in activities,” says Gloria. “But she loved Bates Nut Farm. She was smiling, and holding a big pumpkin in her lap. And she was holding up the “I love you!” hand sign! It was so great to see that.” |
Resident, Heather, prefers a smaller pumpkin. |
“I can smell autumn dancing on the breeze. The sweet chill of pumpkin, and crisp sunburnt leaves.”
~Ann Drake At the Pumpkin Patch, resident Heather’s (above) smile danced as one small pumpkin brought pure delight. Memories were made on this day. And, thanks to you, and our Mountain Shadows CARE program, our residents enjoyed the simple pleasure of pumpkins, as the fall leaves turned, during this delicious autumn season! (Oh, and Margo? She’s giving you the “I love you!” sign right now.) |
