On this Thankful Thursday, we are grateful to all who helped make our 31st Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament and 3rd Annual Pickleball Tournament an incredible success – the golfers, our volunteers, our sponsors, and all of our Mountain Shadows Family members. Due to their generosity our residents will continue to live better, more fulfilling lives. |
Thoughts from a first-time participant in the Fall Classic:
“It was so good to be surrounded by people with the biggest hearts and
best intentions. While I have not personally been impacted by an
individual with disabilities, seeing the people who have, and what Mountain Shadows has brought to those individuals – I can’t say it’s anything less than inspiring.”

“We’re so grateful for our longstanding partnership with Mountain Shadows.
We share a similar mission of helping people live healthier, more independent, and more fulfilling lives – and we are happy to play an integral part in that for the residents.”
~ Ron Belville, Founder of Ron’s Pharmacy Services
The Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament is the primary fundraising event of the year for the Mountain Shadows Foundation. And, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, like Ron’s Pharmacy, the MSF tournament has become one of the premier golfing events in the Southern California region.
Ron Belville founded Ron’s Pharmacy Services (RPS) in 1981. RPS joined Guardian Pharmacy in 2017. “Our team of employees, pharmacists and nurses, provides onsite delivery services of medications, supplies specialized medication reporting to meet the needs of the nursing staff, and assists in maintaining medication and administration systems for Mountain Shadows,” says Ron. |
As part of Guardian, Ron’s Pharmacy is part of a growing network of more than 52 pharmacies nationwide. Each pharmacy is managed locally to meet the individual needs of the communities they serve, while receiving the expertise and support of the Guardian national corporate team.
This year, Ron’s Pharmacy generously sponsored a golf foursome, a tee, and a pickleball team. |

Of her first experience playing in the Fall Classic, Danielle says, “I’ve golfed in some tournaments, and this course (Santaluz Golf Course), was one of the better courses. It was beautiful. It was challenging but not too challenging. And the Rancho Santa Fe area, the facility, the clubhouse, all of it, was just gorgeous! “We also had two players in the Pickleball Tournament. They were personnel from our pharmacy. They were so excited! I didn’t realize how good they were. They won the tournament, which was great! They said it was a lot of fun.” |

“It was also great to have a couple of residents cheering us on at the putting contest,” adds Danielle. “One of our golfers, Carol, almost got the putt in, so it was exciting for everyone.
“But the biggest takeaway of the day was the awards dinner, and hearing the inspiring stories of the families that were there to support Mountain Shadows. They’re not just there to support their own families as they stand today, but new families that are coming into the program, and the future of Mountain Shadows – making sure it’s always accessible for those in need. “It’s a scary time for organizations like Mountain Shadows – for the whole IDD (Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities) space across the country. It’s neglected sorely by the government, and overlooked by a lot of people. “We value our strong partnership with Mountain Shadows. Through the years, times change, regulations change, needs change. And we value someone who is able to come to the table and work together through any issues, challenges, and changes. That’s the best kind of partner we can ask for. “We’ll be excited to partner with Mountain Shadows again next year, and look forward to their 32nd year!”
Our deepest thanks to the Ron’s Pharmacy team for their long term generosity and partnership with Mountain Shadows. |
Volunteer Focus: Jim & Deborah Marshall |

“Mountain Shadows is a great organization. It’s a good cause.”
~Deborah Marshall, Fall Classic Volunteer
“Mountain Shadows is a worthwhile cause to be associated with,” says Jim Marshall. “We worked with Mandy Huiras at San Diego State University for a long time, and we developed a good relationship with her. She reached out to us when she started working at Mountain Shadows. It’s hard to say no to Mandy.”
The Marshall’s have been enthusiastic volunteers at the Annual Fall Classic for several years. Their vitality, sense of humor, and dedication to the Mountain Shadows mission, are well known to event participants, and their philanthropic spirit is appreciated by the Mountain Shadows Family.
One of the couple’s most endearing and helpful qualities is their willingness to jump in wherever they are needed on tournament day.
“The first time I was involved,” says Jim, “I drove John Martindale’s wife, Tresa, around the course so she could take pictures. Then the next year, when she wasn’t able to be at the event, they slapped a camera on me and sent me out – with very little training! So, I wandered around the course aimlessly, taking photographs – candid shots, as well as posed shots, making sure we got photos of everyone on the course.”

Deborah adds, with her own sense of humor chuckling through, “I sell the raffle tickets – and I threaten the players with their lives if they don’t buy them!” “She strong arms them,” says Jim. “We do good. And it’s a lot of fun! Everyone laughs and it’s really fun. Jim drives the golf cart and I ride with him while he does the photography. I try to sell tickets on the course, but the golfers are too focused on the game. So I threaten them that I’ll get back to them during the happy hour – and I do!”
The couple shares that the awards dinner is a highlight of the day.
“The dinner is wonderful!” says Deborah. “They have one or two of the residents’ families share their experiences about what Mountain Shadows has done for them, and where they would be if it weren’t for the organization.
“It’s pretty heartwarming. John Martindale was the speaker this year and he brought me to tears. He talked about the history of Mountain Shadows and how they got there.” |
The Marshall’s are both happily retired. “I’m really good at it,” quips Jim. “I’ve found my core competency – retirement! Deborah’s incredibly busy though. I have to make an appointment for dinner.”
Prior to retiring, Deborah was a systems engineer for IBM and IBM Business Partners. “She’s the brains of the operation,” says Jim. “She’s also the beauty. So people ask me, ‘What do you add?’ And I tell them I can cook.”
Says Deborah, “I traveled for a living, implementing software and training people on it. I traveled all over the world, so now I’m a 5 million miler on American Airlines and am Platinum for life.”
“I would go with her on an occasional business trip and stay in the hotel and eat bonbons while she worked,” adds Jim. Deborah jumps in, “Jim was the Director of Labor Relations for San Diego Gas & Electric.”
“I’ve worked for a number of Fortune 100 companies during my career – General Dynamics, Kaiser Permanente, and the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center in Point Loma.” says Jim.
In addition to their volunteer work at Mountain Shadow, the Marshall’s give back to their community in many ways. Jim and Deborah have been involved with San Diego State University for many years. Deborah remains active in the Mission Beach Women’s Club, a philanthropic organization. “Each year, we select multiple causes. We select one cause as our main fundraising event and 15 or 20 others where we donate the same amount to each organization. We also support a number of animal rescue organizations.”
“Mountain Shadows is a really valuable enterprise,” says Jim. “It’s definitely a worthwhile organization.”
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Jim and Deborah for their incredible generosity to Mountain Shadows! |
