Watching faces light up, like James’, in the photo above, is a gift of joy, that we owe to the San Marcos Community Foundation (SMCF). Far from just a piece of furniture to our MSOS day program participants, the chairs are a life-lift, offering comfort, relaxation, and crucial therapy, to those who are mobility-challenged.
The San Marcos Community Foundation serves to enrich the quality of life for the community of San Marcos and has been doing so since 1988, according to their website. The Foundation continually strives to seek opportunities to strengthen the San Marcos community, and the non-profit organizations serving it. In its first 25 years of service, more than $1M has been donated to non-profits serving the San Marcos community.
The Foundation provides grants to a wide variety of non-profit groups serving San Marcos residents. Grants have been awarded to a diverse group of non-profit organizations serving different purposes: Arts & Culture, Children & Youth, Health & Well-being, Education, Seniors, Civic Life, and Wildlife. The Jewish Community Foundation manages the SMCF grant application process.

Deepak enjoys a massage, helping to improve his circulation, reduce chronic pain from limited mobility, and promote muscle relaxation. |
“Our MSOS day program participants love the recliners,” says Flor Angel, MSOS, Program Director.
The majority of MSOS participants are non-ambulatory and use wheelchairs. Sitting in a wheelchair for prolonged periods can impair circulation, and cause the skin and tissues to break down, leading to the development of painful pressure sores.
“We are using the chair’s massage function with many of our participants for relief positioning, to alleviate skin integrity issues.” |
Deepak is safely positioned on the SMCF-gifted chair, which features electronic lift and therapeutic massage functions. |
“The recliners are great, because the massage function also helps with sensory stimulation, and helps participants relax,” adds Cecilia Bello, Director of Ancillary Services. “Reclining helps those with edema, varicose veins, and scoliosis.
“The power lift feature also assists staff in transferring individuals onto and off of the recliners, improving the safety of transfers for staff and participants.”
For individuals who are able to stand, the chairs provide assistance in moving from a standing to sitting position and back again, offering a feeling of increased independence and freedom. |

“Through the generosity of the San Marcos Community Foundation, the power lift massage chairs have become a source of daily comfort for our participants, who are unable to move independently,” says Stacy Sullivan, Executive Director, MSSG/MSAS. “The chairs offer relief, relaxation, and a renewed sense of independence that greatly improves their quality of life.” Our heartfelt gratitude to the San Marcos Community Foundation for their generosity, which is making a positive impact on the lives of our Mountain Shadows Family members each and every day. |

The human capacity to care for others isn’t something trivial or something to be taken for granted.
Rather it is something we should cherish. 14th Dalai Lama Thank you for caring San Marcos Community Foundation! |
