Stephanie with one of her favorite canine friends. |
Stephanie is one of Mountain Shadows most highly functioning residents. She participates in many of our CARE program activities. When she told her mother, Pam, she wanted to move out of the family home, Pam started looking for a place that would be safe AND allow Stephanie as much independence as possible.
"It's really our job as parents to get our children to a point where they are independent, where they don't feel the need to be at home anymore, so that they can go out and live their lives. I think a lot of parents of handicapped children don't do that. They keep them home.
"Stephanie loves Mountain Shadows and she doesn't even want to stay overnight at our home anymore. She considers Orange house her home now. Even for the holidays, we would love to have her stay with us sometimes, but she just won't have it. She'll usually come home to visit us on Saturday or Sunday, but sometimes she'll tell me, "Sorry, I'm busy, mom." |
"At first, it was hard to come to terms with Stephanie's disability," says Pam. "You have an expectation of how things are going to be, but then it's so beautiful just as it is. She's a good kid. A good kid.
"I think her sisters grew up to be more empathetic because of Stephanie. It touched them and really made them better women.
"We learned to enjoy every part of life, every part of life, from Stephanie. She taught us to be happier people, because she is just always a happy person.
"I just can't say enough good things about Mountain Shadows. Stephanie adores the staff. As a mother, I feel good about where she's at, and what she's doing when I'm not there. The ability for her to be independent and still be well taken care of, that makes me feel really good." |
