Like Four, Three, Two …
“If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea, I’ll sail the world to find you …
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can’t see,
I’ll be the light to guide you …” * |
“We’ll find out what we’re made of When we are called to help our friends in need …”
Camp Able is one of Mountain Shadows most popular and life-changing CARE Program activities. Each year, thanks to our generous donors, residents swim, sail, canoe, play volleyball in the sand, and even sing around the campfire, at this fully accessible aquatic camp for special needs individuals. |
“You can count on me like one, two, three …
I’ll be there … And I know when I need it, I can count on YOU like, four, three, two … And you’ll be there … ‘Cause that’s what friends are supposed to do … “
While many of us take a day at the beach for granted, just getting to the water’s edge can be challenging for the disabled. For our Mountain Shadows residents, a day at the beach requires a fleet of custom, handicap-accessible buses, drivers, caregivers, special equipment, medical supplies, special foods, and more. “It’s a lot of work!” says Angela Addington, Mountain Shadows Foundation. “The counselors at Camp Able are saints. There’s a substantial amount of work and care that goes into making this camp possible. “The counselors and staff are incredibly patient. Every resident requires at least two people just to get them into a floating wheelchair, down to the beach, and into the water. I recently visited the camp, and I was completely taken aback. I was humbled and amazed at all the work they do.” |
“If you’re tossin’ and you’re a turnin’ and you just can’t fall asleep …
I’ll sing a song beside you …”
“I think one of the most popular things they did was a singalong,” adds Angela. “That was a lot of fun. They sang a lot of camp songs. And one of the staff was really excited when they started singing the last song – Count on Me by Bruno Mars. She’s like, ‘Oh! This is my song! I used to sing this song to my daughter!” |
“And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me … Every day I will remind you …”
One resident’s family made a splash with a surprise visit to Camp Able this year.
“A resident’s grandmother, grandfather and uncle came down from Los Angeles,” says Angela. “They clearly love each other and have a close relationship. It’s quite a drive for them to come from Los Angeles.
“As I was talking with her uncle, he said something like, ‘We know she is in good hands at Mountain Shadows. You’re giving her a better life than we ever could.’ They were very nice, and our resident was really happy to see them. I think it meant a lot to everyone.” |
“We’ll find out what we’re made of When we are called to help our friends in need …” |
Adds Angela, “Resident Brianna had been waiting to get into the water all day. She didn’t want to go on the nature walk. She just wanted to get into the water. That was her goal for the day.
“As soon as that happened she was SO happy! She was so happy to get in the water and just sit there dangling her feet and floating around.” |

Resident Rachel was in awe of her surroundings. “Rachel was just happy to be at the beach,” says Angela. “She was happy to wander around and explore.” |
“It was a beautiful day,” continues Angela. “There were lots of sea birds. The waves were crashing. It was very peaceful.” |
“The morning started with a nature walk – and I could see the residents’ faces change right away,” says Angela. “I know from personal experience; I love the water. When I’m at the beach, I can’t help but smile. There’s something about the salty air. Something about the ocean. I saw that same feeling in the residents.” |
