Amy Jennings and Mary Magill are no strangers to pickleball, or to the Mountain Shadows mission. Both women are former college athletes, current high school/middle school Physical Education Teachers – and pickleball enthusiasts. Amy is sister-in-law to Mountain Shadows Cedar house resident, Nancy. The team was recruited by Nancy’s mom, Debra Jennings, to play in the Pickleball Tournament, and represent Nancy. |

Amy and Mary began playing pickleball in 2018, and quickly became avid picklers. Their passion for the sport was deepened during the COVID pandemic.
Says Amy, “When COVID shut everything down, pickleball seemed to be the one activity we could still play. We’d setup in the street, or a cul de sac, or at a park. We’d put down painter’s tape in the street to create a court. It was like in the old days. We would yell, ‘Car!’ and then have to move the net and slide everything over to the side of the street. Then, when the car passed, we’d move everything back out into the street and keep playing. It was pretty fun.”

“The Mountain Shadows Pickleball Tournament was on Halloween,” adds Amy. “We didn’t know what to expect, but we like to have fun dressing up. So, when we heard they were having a pickleball fundraiser on Halloween, we said, ‘Sweet!’. “We dressed up as little old ladies and rolled up to the tournament in our costumes. I had a walker, old lady glasses, and my hair was in rollers. We were all about it. “Then, when we got there, we realized no one else was dressed up. But I think everyone was entertained by us, and everyone was so friendly. It was a lot of fun.” |

Adds Mary, “The tournament was so fun! Everyone was so friendly. It was a fun, social event. It was very well organized and it was so apparent everyone from Mountain Shadows has a passion for what they do.”
“Mountain Shadows, I think, has been the best thing for Nancy,” says Amy. “Living there has expanded her life and her longevity. She has more of a social life, and friends she can interact with, rather than being at home with just her parents every day. It’s contributed to her becoming more independent.” |

“The Mountain Shadows Tournament was very upscale compared to tournaments we usually play in,” adds Amy. “It was a great facility. It was fancy. The courts were really nice. They had refreshments and snacks. There was a good turnout. I would absolutely recommend this tournament to others.” Mary agrees, “I was grateful to be a part of the tournament – and happy to be there to support Nancy and all of the residents.” |
