Life Lessons from . . . Barbie??? |

|
By Sheryl Wilde This month, we will be featuring stories about Mountain Shadows Outreach Services (MSOS).
The mission at MSOS is to open new doorways to learning through comprehensive, life-enriching experiences, including: community integration, mobility training, arts/crafts, music, sensory therapy, computer games/classes, cooking workshops, volunteer opportunities, and much, much more.
The new blockbuster movie, Barbie, may seem like an odd way to begin the MSOS story ... yet beyond the sparkling pink, spike-heeled pumps with the cotton candy puff, we believe one of life's most important lessons lies ... and that lesson is integral to everything we do. |

In the movie, Barbie has an existential crisis, and begins questioning the plastic, pink perfection of Barbieland.
When Barbie enters the human world, she experiences, firsthand, the reality of being human, and all of its many imperfections.
As she shares a park bench with an old woman, Barbie contemplates the idea of beauty - and the artificial beauty inherent in Barbieland. And as she looks at the old woman, she says, "You are beautiful." The woman smiles and says, "I know it." And they share a laugh together.
It is the first time Barbie sees genuine beauty in the real world - wrinkles and all. At Mountain Shadows Outreach Services, we celebrate the unique beauty of everyone - of all colors, ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities. |
Last month, Mountain Shadows Outreach Services celebrated the genuine and unique beauty of all our participants and residents with a Barbie party! |
All MSOS participants were able to walk or roll into a specially made "Barbie Box" for photos.
"We had games and snacks and prizes," says Frank Salas, MSOS Day Program Supervisor. |
"The Barbie party was really priceless," adds Rhesajane (RJ) Whitaker, LVN. "I love being able to make the participants smile. I just love seeing the big smile on their faces." |
"We do activities like the Barbie party so the individuals will have a great time - and to improve the quality of their lives," adds Flor Angel, MSOS Director. |
"We do a lot of fun things for the participants," says Frank. "We make sure they are having fun every day!" |
At Mountain Shadows Outreach Services, we believe everyone, each of our participants, is truly beautiful inside and out. And, through our many programs and activities, we hope to enrich their lives so they can thrive and truly enjoy life!
It is the best day ever. So was yesterday. So is tomorrow, and every day from now until forever. ~Barbie |
