THIS is why YOU are here ... |

Mountain Shadows Resident, Evelyn. |
By Sheryl Wilde Evelyn Gatto, pictured above, is the reason you are here, right now, reading this. She's one of the reasons we are ALL here at Mountain Shadows. She's one of the reasons you participated in our Mountain Shadow Foundation Fall Classic Golf Tournament or our Pickleball Tournament.
Evelyn suffered a stroke while in the womb and has bilateral schizencephaly, an extremely rare developmental birth defect characterized by abnormal slits, or clefts, in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain.
“There are holes in Evelyn’s brain, in the back part of her right hemisphere, and the front part of her left hemisphere, so the two hemispheres don’t communicate with each other as they should," says her mother, Rosemary. "She’s in a wheelchair. She needs g-tube feedings. She’s legally blind. She can’t talk." Click here to see Evelyn's whole story |
Mountain Shadows Resident, Karen, and the Trogdon Family. Your participation in our MSF Tournaments supports over 100 familes, like Karen's and Evelyn's. |
When YOU help Mountain Shadows, through participation in our fundraising events, you help not only Evelyn and our other residents - helping our special needs individuals has a ripple effect. You are also helping their families, and the broader community.
Thanks directly to your support of our golf and pickleball tournaments, Rosemary Gatto, Evelyn's mother, can say this:
“Mountain Shadows gave Evelyn a life – and gave my husband and my children a second chance. Since she moved to Mountain Shadows, I have this sense of inner peace. Evelyn is okay. It’s not all just on me. If something happens to me, Evelyn will be okay. She’s safe. She’s provided for. "I am eternally grateful to Mountain Shadows and all of its supporters." |

Don Vonk, Partner Emeritus, Considine & Considine, Certified Public Accountants, has participated in every Fall Classic Golf Tournament since the very beginning.
"Once again, the Mountain Shadows tournament was amazing - especially since I won," says Don. "We didn't win because of me. I always try to get a couple of good players on my foursome. This year, we had the guy who won the long drive. He made every putt he took. He played golf at UC Santa Barbara, so it was almost unfair. "I've played in a lot of golf tournaments and the Mountain Shadows event is always one of the best. Santaluz is gorgeous!
"Golf tournaments come and go. It's easy to play in the Cancer Society Tournament or the UCSD Medical Center Tournament, because everybody knows them. But Mountain Shadows is super unique.
"The bottom line is, Mountain Shadows, helping the residents, it's a good cause. That's why I come back, and I think that's why others come back, year after year." |
Adds Dan Marrs, MSF Board Member, Chair Fall Classic Committee, HUB International, "We had 128 golfers this year. Santaluz is a great course and everyone enjoys playing it.
"We added a fun new feature to the tournament this year and everyone loved it - a golf ball cannon. It's a handheld cannon that shoots your golf ball to the green! It allowed our foursome to eagle, and a lot of other groups did too. It was really fun!
"Thank you to all who participated - our golfers, volunteers, and sponsors! "We have the date for the 30th Annual MSF Fall Classic Golf Tournament reserved for next year. We hope you all will join us on October 28th, 2024!!!" |
Our 1st Annual Pickleball Tournament was also a great success! Everyone enjoyed the friendly competition on the beautiful Santaluz courts.
