What is a Charitable IRA Distribution?

The Charitable IRA Distribution allows you to designate your IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to support the Mountain Shadows Foundation.

If you are 70 1/2 or older, under the IRA SECURE Act, you can rollover up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to the Mountain Shadows Foundation - whether you are required to take distributions or not.

It's easy! AND it allows you to save money on taxes and support the organization you love -- Mountain Shadows Support Group!

Why Should You Make an IRA Rollover Gift?

A Charitable IRA Distribution is a great way to make a significant gift to the Mountain Shadows Foundation, without using cash or other assets that you need now.

The benefits to YOU are many:

Gifts made from your IRA (up to $100,000 annually) are not considered taxable income. They qualify toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and can lower your income AND taxes.

Making an IRA Rollover Gift may prevent you from being bumped up into a higher federal and/or state income tax bracket.

A Charitable Bequest enables you to continue to support the Mountain Shadows mission after you are gone.

The benefits to YOU of making a Charitable Bequest make it even better:

You can reduce your estate taxes by taking a charitable deduction for the value of the bequest.

Your family, with careful planning, can also avoid paying income taxes on assets received from your estate.

What Type of Gifts Can I Make Through a Charitable Bequest?

A Charitable Bequest can be made in several ways:

- - - - You can give a specific dollar amount.
        
        You can give a certain percentage of your estate.
        
        You can give specific assets, such as cash, stocks, bonds, jewelry or other personal property.
        
        You can give the residue of your estate (after all other gifts are bequeathed and debts, taxes, administrative costs, probate fees and court costs are paid).

A Charitable Remainder Unitrust

Giving your home, or a vacation residence, to the Mountain Shadows Foundation through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust can provide you with income or cash, along with a charitable deduction. Here are two plans to consider:

Tax-Free Sale in a Trust

- - - - Permits you to sell your home tax-free.
        
        Provides you with income for life.
        
        Allows you to take a current charitable income tax deduction.
        
        Distributes the remaining trust principal to the Mountain Shadows Foundation.

Cash Plus a Trust

A Charitable Remainder Unitrust can also be structured to provide you with cash up-front when your property sells.

A Bargain Sale

A Bargain Sale is another method which allows you to sell your home and reduce your taxes.

By selling your home to the Mountain Shadows Foundation at a discount:

You receive a charitable deduction for the difference between the market value and the sales price.

Your $250,000 home exclusion ($500,000 for married couples) may cover the taxable gain on cash received for the sale of your personal residence.

Any remaining gain may be offset by your charitable deduction.

Life Estate Reserved

If you would like to gift your home to the Mountain Shadows Foundation, and continuing living in your house, the Life Estate Reserved may be a good option for you.

When you create a Life Estate Reserved, you deed your home the Mountain Shadows Foundation, but reserve the right to continue living in it for life.

You benefit from a current tax deduction and the Mountain Shadows Foundation receives your home in the future.
